Health problems and constant meowing

Particular breeds, such as Siamese and Oriental, are particularly talkative, social, and love “talk” to us; while other cats may barely pronounce a meow.

Health problems and constant meowing

Cats learn how to communicate with us to get their needs satisfied and if they understand that a particular meow provokes a desired response, they will meow more and more..

Why does a cat meow for no apparent reason?

  • The cat is trying to get your attention
  • The cat wants to play
  • The cat is hungry
  • The cat wants to enter the bedroom at 4:00 am 🙂

Attention, especially at the fourth point, the cat will soon understand, how to obtain something from us!

How to keep a cat out of the bedroom at night…. let’s try!

We can bring him/her in a room with a tiny light or television turned on, obviously providing food, water, the litter box and also one of our t-shirt or sweater which we no longer use, and hope he/she will soon learn to stop meowing all night long.

Before going to bed we can play with him/her for 10 minutes an unbridled game to make him/her exhausted, after before sleeping do not forget the earplugs …. and good night!

If we ignore his/her requests, in the end the cat should stop meowing.

If the cat meows during the day

Consider buying a scratching post and/or interactive games which may keep the cat busy, the meowing may be due to boredom

Here you can buy many interactive games for cats and dogs

Cuddle more the cat when he/she is sleeping, in this way caresses will have double benefit and he/she will feel satisfied and less stressed

we insert here this third point, although it will be deepened in another article:

get another cat or not?? Surely if the cat is young he/she will accept more easily a playmate of his/her own age; the question changes if the cat is already an adult or senior, you would risk to live with two cats “separated in the house”.

Are we sure that “chattier” cats  just want our attention?

The cat meows for health problems

  • A female cat might meow, moan and continuously rub against everything, because she may be in heat
  • A male cat who cries, screams and often goes in the litter box is at risk of cystitis, inflammation or even worse might have a urinary blockage, I suggest you to immediately bring him to a veterinarian
  • An older cat may meow at night for problems related to chronic kidney disease
  • An older may meow/moan because he/she can not perfectly orient him/herself
  • Hyperthyroidism: an overactive thyroid, common in older cats, can cause an increased hunger, of the state of wakefulness and excitability, making the cat even more talkative.
  • High blood pressure: cats with this problem usually have kidney diseases or hyperthyroidism.
  • Dental issues: infected teeth could make chewing difficult, the cat has a sore mouth
  • Arthritis: older cats can develop arthritis just like dogs and people. Arthritic cats usually move around less, and feel pain
  • Deafness: older cats with hearing problems can meow louder to hear their own voice!
  • Feline senile dementia: also known as cognitive dysfunction syndrome, this is a gradual decline in mental ability which affects some older cats. Symptoms can include disorientation, altered sleep cycles, it is important administer a supplement containing Ginkgo Biloba.
